FAQ

Answers to help you assess and address your content aggregation needs.

Information overload is rampant. But not here. Content aggregation is a potentially overwhelming challenge. Figuring out the company that can find the business intelligence you need, without giving you too much, also can be a daunting challenge. But not here. Since 1998, Moreover Technologies has balanced the dual aims of global information retrieval and refinement for relevance to specific client needs. The following questions help explain what we do, and how we do it.

What’s your breadth of coverage?

Moreover Technologies currently indexes and links out to 42 million posts monthly from 650,000-plus sources. Daily, that’s 1.4 million-plus combined social media reports and online news articles. Social media links have been filtered from a repository of 12 million sources to a spam-free White List of 618,000-plus sources. Currently, there are 34,000-plus online news sources. Social media links include blogs, podcasts, social video, photo sharing sites, microblogs, wikis, reviews and forums. Besides RSS feeds generated through Weblogs.com, Moreover Technologies’ industry-dominant ping server, the company proactively harvests social and online media, and corporate and government news and marketing communications. New, meaningful sources are added as they emerge, and any Internet-extractable source may be added upon request.

As part of its coverage, Moreover Technologies continuously monitors these sources:

  • Local, national and international publications
  • Business and industry magazines
  • Trade publications and journals
  • Wire services
  • Company websites
  • Message boards and discussion groups
  • Specialized micro-industry publications, newsletters and announcements
  • Research group reports
  • Government and university sites

What’s your depth of coverage?

Complementing its industry-leading breadth of coverage, Moreover Technologies also offers depth, with search options tied to 800 industries, 100-plus countries and 50 languages. Among indexed categories are more than 5,200 medical and health sources, 5,100 financial sources, 5,200 technology sources, 4,000 government and political sources, 1,000 energy sector sources, 1,300 science sources, and about 10,000 sports sources and sections.

How does Moreover Technologies stay on top of the latest social media developments?

As content aggregation specialists since 1998, we know what to look for, where to look, and how to evaluate what we find. We work every aspect of the process, continuously, to stay ahead of the pack.

How do you ensure you provide only relevant content?

We pay attention to what our clients want, and use every technological tool to find what’s on-point and weed out what’s not. Moreover Technologies uses a Metabase XML application—including both semantic and geodata criteria—that applies more than 30 pieces of metadata per article. Plus, we “scrub” for spam and other junk that takes up space but contributes nothing beneficial. Bottom line: You get clean and pinpointed results based on your media monitoring requirements.

What metatags do you offer?

Moreover Technologies’ tags—some common to both social media content and online media content, some specific to one or the other—include: media type and language; article headline and source URL links; feed and source rank information; location of the source; outbound links to other articles; stock ticker data; index time and publish time; article topic, source categories and genre; duplicate data; access registration requirements; geolocation data including coordinates; semantic data and article mark-up.

How do you differ from the growing pack of content aggregation and media monitoring services?

We utilized leading edge technology to establish frontrunner status in the content aggregation realm in 1998—and we’re still there. Newcomers tout their prowess, but staying power is what really proves the case. Our long-term experience base also enables us to offer “one-stop shopping” for our clients. We make available through clean, clear and convenient reporting the combined worlds of online news and social media views.

Moreover Technologies is designed for the open architecture of the Internet, targeting specific information customers need and providing near-real-time access to that information in the form of live headlines that link users to content on publishers' sites. This allows us to:

  • Deliver new information as soon as it is published
  • Link to information from virtually any source on the Internet, from mainstream news sources to niche industry sites, company websites and message boards
  • Add any new online source within 24 hours
  • Filter and categorize a customer's internal corporate content and deliver it alongside external information
  • Customize solutions with unrivaled speed and flexibility

What facts can you offer to document your frontrunner claims?

Our track record documents a long innovation-oriented tradition, including involvement in co-writing the original RSS standard. Moreover Technologies incorporates infrastructure based on Weblogs.com, the Web’s original ping server. Weblogs.com, owned by Moreover Technologies, automatically notifies client subscribers the moment news, social media and other information publishes. Dave Winer, one of the founders of RSS, created Weblogs.com. In tandem with the founding of Moreover Technologies as an original content aggregation company by Nick Denton in 1998, the company has demonstrated the value of getting out in front, and staying there.

Who can speak to your claims?

Moreover Technologies maintains a top-notch client base, serving a variety of Fortune 500 clients and the world's leading media monitoring agencies. Clients include: Shell Oil, Sony, Saatchi & Saatchi, Adobe, European Space Agency, Citigroup, UK Cabinet Office, Hill & Knowlton, Durrants, the BBC, and Kingfisher.

What types of social media do you cover?

Through Newsdesk and Metabase services, Moreover Technologies now offers extensive blog and podcast postings, along with content tracking through such microblog sites as Twitter and FriendFeed; video sharing via YouTube and other sites; forums including Neowin and DigitalSpy; consumer reviews through Amazon user reviews and the like; wikis encompassing Wikimedia Foundation sites; and photo sharing through Flickr and SmugMug, among others. The firm is working on indexing social news aggregating companies, such as Digg, and bookmarking sites such as Delicious.

How fast is the social media repository growing?

We’re growing the repository at the rate of about 50,000 sources per month. These are sources refined into a spam-free White List from more than 12 million prospective sources. Currently, we’re at 618,000 sources…and counting.

Why should I pay for online media monitoring and content aggregation when there are free resources?

You can save time and effort, avoid frustration, and end up with superior results by relying on Moreover Technologies. It’s a bit like building a house. You might save out-of-pocket money by being your own general contractor; but most people come out ahead by hiring an experienced professional to locate, obtain and assemble all the required permits, material and equipment. The same view applies to online media monitoring and content aggregation. Developing a suitable source list, then making it relevant and easily reported can be a fulltime job—for many people. It is our fulltime job, so it doesn’t have to be yours.

In addition, free services typically provide such general consumer information as sports, weather and special interests. Moreover Technologies’ expertise lies in harnessing business information from the broadest range of hard-to-reach and industry-specific sources on the Internet.

Moreover Technologies also adds value to the raw content by converting it to XML and enriching it with valuable metadata (such as time, source, source type, region, company ticker symbol, etc.) to enable comprehensive categorization.

What does near-real-time really mean?

Moreover Technologies continually identifies, indexes and links to breaking content, often within minutes of publication. Sophisticated indexing systems dynamically recognize and adjust to publishing frequencies, receive notifications (pings) by publishers the moment new content hits the Web, and poll key sites at frequent intervals. This multi-pronged strategy for indexing the flood of fast- breaking news and social media ensures availability to clients to act upon while it's fresh enough to make a difference.

How do you go beyond RSS feeds?

RSS is an inbound service, which is a great way to gather up immense amounts of information. However, many corporations, government entities, social media, marketing communications, and other valuable sources of business intelligence are not set up for an RSS feed. Moreover Technologies goes out and gets this salient information, and includes it in our metabase repository, so that our clients can access complete, well-rounded data.

What if I want a source that you don’t already have in your repository?

We’ll add it. We know how cumbersome and frustrating it can be to subscribe to “required reading” media apart from our service, so we do the legwork for you.
